History of Tri-County Lumber, Inc.

In 1941, the original Tri-County Lumber was formed by Carl Trovall and Margaret Blakely in Clearwater, MN. In 1955, Jack Trovall (Carl's son) became a partner in the company. Brad Hartkopf was hired by Tri-County Lumber in 1973. Upon Margaret's retirement in 1978, the original Tri-County Lumber was sold, and closed in 1985. In 1984, Jack and Brad co-founded a lumber company in another community. Jack retired in 1995. In 1998, Brad sold his share in the company.

In 2001, sixty years after it's beginning, Tri-County Lumber was re-established in Clearwater by Jack Trovall and Brad Hartkopf, along with their sons Deron Trovall, and Jason Hartkopf.

In 2024, The Hartkopf Family was ready to retire and found a diamond in the ruff. Dave & Lori Ables along with their 3 Sons David, Sam & Nicholas purchased the business and brought with them 30 plus years or Business leadership and 13 years of experience running their 3 Sons Hardware Stores. The Ables will continue with the traditions built by prior ownership and are committed to maintaining Independence and Family run business principals with plans to grow the Clearwater Campus by adding a full Hardware, Power Equipment and Rental Store on to the existing LBM Design Center in the summer of 2026 and look to expand to multiple locations over the next 10 years.

2025 The Design Center was completely remodeled and a Full Pro Tool Center was Added along with Multiple new Product lines being stocked such as Timbertech Decking DimondKote Siding, GAF Shingles, Versetta Stone and more!

2026 Marks the 25th Anniversary of the New Tri County Lumber... Look for our New E-commerce site launching in March and many other technological enhancements along with delivery notifications that include material pictures & much more!
